If this is your first time having a Medicare health plan, you may think it is a once-and-done enrollment. Once you become eligible for Medicare, you need to save some important year dates. This is because each year has specific points where you can change or sign-up for a new Medicare health plan. The first seven months of your IEP (Initial Enrollment Period) allow you to sign-up for a Medicare plan. If you don't know yet, your Initial Enrollment Period will start 3 months before your 65th birthday and end 3 months after you turn 65 years old.
Although you know when your IEP will occur, signing up or changing the coverage of your Medicare might seem confusing. Fortunately, a Medicare enrollment period happens annually. And the changes you made with your Medicare coverage are not permanent. In other words, you will have multiple chances each year to modify your Medicare coverage. When Are You Eligible For Each Part of Medicare? Here is a brief overview of the different parts you can enroll yourself in Medicare: Part A Your IEP allows you to enroll for Medicare Part A. Are you currently enrolled in a railroad retirement board disability or Social Security disability plan? If yes, you can be enrolled in Medicare Part A automatically. Part B When you reach your 65th birthday, you can enroll for Medicare Part B during your Initial Enrollment Period. Like Medicare Part B, you will be automatically enrolled, especially if you've received retirement and disability benefits. Part C Medicare Part C is also called Medicare Advantage. Before applying for this type of Medicare plan, you should complete the first two parts (Part A and B). You can sign up for this Medicare plan during IEP and other enrollment periods available in a year. Final Thoughts If you have become eligible for Medicare, you should first familiarize yourself with Medicare's enrollment dates. Three months give you enough time to change or enroll in new plans. It is highly recommended to make your decision sooner. This will give you enough spare time to make additional changes and ensure that you have the right Medicare coverage.
